We often think of chickens as simple barnyard animals. But according to acclaimed author Sy Montgomery, they (and many other animals) have far more going on than we give them credit for.

In this episode of Wild Connection, I talk with Sy to talk about her writing journey, the lessons she’s learned from animals, and her new book What the Chicken Knows. From the curious intelligence of octopuses to the overlooked brilliance of backyard birds, Sy’s work reminds us that we are part of nature, not separate from it. And the more we pay attention, the richer our lives can become.
Some of my favorite moments from our conversation:
How Sy chooses the animals she writes about.
Why chickens deserve our curiosity.
What it means to be a “good creature” in a rapidly changing world.
We also got into a fun discussion about prairie dogs and personality. Part of my own research came up describing how cultural differences in prairie dogs can lead to unique ways of coping with a deadly predator, the rattlesnake. If you want to see more about that you can watch the video on Wild Connection TV.
Sy's work is powerful and can deepen your understanding and appreciation for other species. I’ve created a free downloadable discussion guide to help you reflect, journal, or even host a conversation with your own community.
Listen to the full conversation on the podcast, and discover how animal stories can reconnect us with nature and with ourselves.
And finally, if you want to deepen your own connection with nature? Check out my new Audible course Reconnect with Nature and the companion workbook Rooted in Nature. You’ll find everyday, accessible ways to rediscover wonder and well-being, no hiking boots required.
